I have been a student of Ellen’s for several years. First attended vocal jazz workshops that were fun, and challenging, in the best way. Since then I have been taking private lessons, which I have thoroughly enjoyed and have found so beneficial. My voice, range and interpretation continue to improve, as well as my appreciation of vocal jazz. And as my confidence continues to grow, I’m enjoying more challenges! If you love to sing…you want to study with Ellen Johnson.

Coming from a background primarily in choral singing, I was inspired near retirement to take on solo vocal jazz performance (a "late bloomer!"). Ellen's introductory vocal jazz performance classes enabled me to make that transition and provided me with a substantive foundation in vocal jazz performance. It has also served me well in my exploration of other music genres. Ellen really is a masterful teacher, as well as a gifted performer. She brings wonderful energy, keen insight, creative approaches to overcoming blocks and vocal technique issues and a sense fun to her work with students. In these pandemic times, her online workshops and classes have been providing me with a vital means of staying connected with other singers and enabling me to continue my musical journey.

Ellen has helped me exponentially improve with singing. I had no formal lesson prior to meeting Ellen, and I feel like I've lucked out with the "right" teacher the first try. She is sensible, understanding, insightful and willing to work with your vision and what you see in your mind's eye. I never feel like I don't make sense to her when I try and explain what I'm seeing/feeling/hearing and she gives great advice and feedback back to me. I feel much more appreciation for this art and can see so much deeper into it now, and I have many more colors on my palette to choose from and work with. I absolutely recommend her.

Ellen’s energy, perseverance and audacious love for the vocal instrument, not to mention her dual gifts of performing and teaching, have added untold confidence in my eagerness to find "the groove" and explore the world of jazz. After a long career in musical theatre, I am now about to release my third jazz CD. It wouldn't have happened had it not been for her. I consider her my mentor." – Gary Brumburgh, voice student

I’ve studied with a few vocal teachers, but Ellen was the only person who was able to help me understand a particular handicap I had with my vocal technique and help me work through it. Her lessons gave me the confidence to push myself (in a good way) to try new techniques, which in turn helped increase my vocal range. She knew which exercises I needed to improve my performance. Most of all, she is a kind and gentle teacher.

Ellen is a master vocal teacher. She has a careful and attentive ear for hearing and diagnosing what a singer is attempting to do, and has a wide range of suggestions, analogies, and imagery to make the vocal instrument real. In addition to her skills, she is a lot of fun to work with. I highly recommend Ellen for singers and vocalists of all levels!

I studied voice with Ellen in the late 1980s in San Diego, but she was so instrumental (pun intended) in correcting my vocal problems and steering me in the right direction that I still list her on my musical theatre resume 30 years later! I was having trouble getting cast in anything, but that changed once I was able to incorporate the changes from our lessons. She also invited me to a very informative seminar given by her mentor Roland Wyatt (then vocal coach for Manhattan Transfer, among others) that I draw from to this day. Thank you, Ellen!

Ellen is an amazing vocal teacher! If you have the opportunity to study with her it will be forever worth it! I'm a former student who studied with her when she lived in Long Beach and now I play large stages like the House of Blues and the Belly Up. Someday soon it will be stadiums. Thank you Ellen! <3 I highly recommend getting her vocal warm up CD as well, so good!!

Smply splendid. Singing demands intimacy and transparency. Ellen creates an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance that is rare for her level of expertise. She knows how to bring out the best within without condemnation or judgment. Thank you Ellen.
